About Us

We’re More Than an Art Fair

We believe that art makes a place worth living in. That community can fund creativity. And that together, we can change what’s possible for artists and neighborhoods across central Indiana.

What We Stand For

Penrod invests in central Indiana’s artists and the arts community through three signature events and year-round giving programs, so that art remains at the heart of Hoosier life. We’re working towards a central Indiana where every artist has the support to create, every community has access to the arts, and our creative spirit thrives in every neighborhood.

Community First.

We exist to serve Central Indiana, not ourselves. Every decision is made with the community’s artists and arts organizations in mind.

Practice Generosity.

We don't wait until we have enough to give. We give now, we give specifically, and we give in ways that create real, lasting change.

Volunteer Power.

Our all-volunteer model isn't a workaround, it's a point of pride. It means every dollar you give is going right back into the community.

Rooted in Indianapolis.

We're not importing a model from somewhere else. We were built here, for here, by people who love Indiana.

Milestones That Matter

The moments that made us who we are.

1967

Penrod is Established

In 1967, Indianapolis needed a new home for its art museum. A group of civic leaders—volunteers—decided to do something about it. They named their organization after a character from an Indianapolis novel: Penrod Schofield, a kid who was always getting into something worthwhile.

The First Penrod Arts Fair

Held on the grounds of what would become Newfields, the very campus they were helping to build. They sold art, charged admission, and poured every dollar back into the community.

Penrod Pinwheel is Created

We introduced the Penrod Pinwheel to represent the momentum of our mission. It has since become the definitive mark of excellence for the Central Indiana arts scene.

The First Legacy Fund Gift Given

Penrod gave its first Legacy Fund gift in 2025, marking a meaningful milestone in the organization’s commitment to lasting community impact. Investments in projects like the Gavin Divergence Statue help expand opportunities for future public art initiatives and neighborhood revitalization efforts that will continue shaping Central Indiana for generations to come.

The Legacy Fund

Built to Last Longer Than Any Single Event

While our annual grants provide immediate support, the Legacy Fund ensures that Penrod’s impact is permanent. This is our endowment: a growing pool of investment that allows us to fund large-scale, transformative projects that annual event proceeds alone can’t reach.

  • Public art installations that will stand for generations.
  • Multi-year residencies that launch an artist’s career.
  • Neighborhood transformations that bring the arts to every corner of Indianapolis.

By surpassing the $1 million mark, the Legacy Fund has changed what is possible for our city. Every gift stays in the fund, grows, and keeps working for Central Indiana long after it is given.
